We offer Italian harpsichords based on three different prototypes:

Although each has a unique voice, all are characterized by the crispness of attack and lucidity of tone that makes them ideal for both continuo and a vast solo repertoire.

All models have two eight foot stops and are entirely strung in brass.  The natural keys are covered with boxwood and the accidentals are ebony-topped walnut. The case exteriors are painted and the interiors are waxed cedar or cypress. The stand consists of two pedestals with turned legs.  Other stands, key coverings, and painted or gilded decorations are also available.

Disposition for all models: Lower manual 2×8′

Giusti

The 1681 Giusti is the most usual sort of Italian harpsichord; a small instrument intended for accompaniment.  The case construction is “attacato alla casa“; that is, it masquerades as an ordinary Italian harpsichord in its outer case, but in fact there is just one case with appropriate veneers and moldings to create the illusion of two.  This instrument is offered in two versions.

Range:  C/E-c3, short octave with split keys for F# and G# at either a1=415 or 440
Dimensions: 6’11” x 2’6″ (215 x 765 cm)

or

Range: BB-d3 chromatic, transposing keyboard (a1=415 and 440; 392 and 466 optional)
Dimensions: 7’5″ x 2’9″ (226 x 90 cm)

Florentine

Our Florentine instruments are built in the style of the pupils and followers of Bartolomeo Cristofori throughout the 18thcentury. They have a single case, like the Giusti, but with no illusion of double case construction.  The larger five octave version has enough notes to accommodate all the sonatas of Domenico Scarlatti.

Range: GG-d3 chromatic or GG, AA-d3, e3, transposing keyboard (a1=415 and 440)
Dimensions:  8’1-1/2″ x 3’1″ (248 x 94 cm)

or

Range: FF-g3 or GG-g3 chromatic, transposing keyboard (a1=415 and 440)
Dimensions: 8’4″ x 3’4″ (255 x 101 cm)

Grimaldi

The 1697 Grimaldi is a large instrument of the type intended to accompany ensembles.  Its extended range makes it extremely versatile for both continuo and solo playing.  It is of traditional Italian construction; an elegant cypress harpsichord in a painted outer case from which it can be removed.

Range: GG-d3 chromatic, transposing keyboard (a1=415 and 440)
Dimensions: 8’4″ x 3’2″ (254 x 97 cm)
